Description

Blue paper fan folds at each bamboo rib; thirty-three ribs edged in red; first and fifth ribs have calligraphy; silver outer rim on fan; painted silver and gold outline of Mount Fuji's peak; black string with green jade bead tied through base.

History Of Use

Use of fans dates from the 6th century; folding fans from the10th century. Fans served many useful purposes; different fans were used for separate occasions, such as teas, religious ceremonies and dances. Fans with painted scenes and figures are common to the mid-19th century and were often made for export.
