Description
Bowl carved from a single piece of wood with three feet resting on a flat circular ring. The rim is burned black with four horizontal incised lines in black just below. Four vertical incised lines in black separate rectangular sections of natural coloured diagonally incised lines along the outer lower portion of the body of the bowl with a horizontal incised line in black below. Feet are all black on the outside, as is the ring.
History Of Use
Prestige bowl, usually part of the royal treasury. It is used for kola and ground nuts served on ceremonial occasions to distinguish guests. Kola nuts are prized for their euphoric properties. Ground nuts were prized for their high oil and protein contents. Kola nuts are shared, normally, between men. When they are offered to women it is a distinct honour.
