Description

Large thread ball woven with red-orange, white, yellow, and lined with green in an abstract geometric pattern. Centre has red band with silver pattern. Base, woven dark blue thread. White tassel with gold trimming and three yellow glass beads on two sides. Top has white silk and gold tie for hanging. Bottom, large gold bow with two long tassels, one red and the other white.

History Of Use

Traditionally, girls played with silk thread balls or 'mari' in court games during the Meiji Period. Present day, considered ornamental and folk art. Once hand made, now made by machine. Paper centre, traditionally Naha on Okinawa.
