Description

Container (part a) of wood with a leather lid (part b) held by a strap. Container (part a) is bulbous-shaped and flared at the bottom. Painted black and red with a design of inverted 'u's'. Lid (part b) has a sewn top with four small flaps. Leather strap is connected by two cords on either side of container. Bottom is coiled in concentric rings of grass; some white particles on area near strap of handle. Red plastic melted on lower bottom near flared edge, in large chip of wood, and a rounded bottom.

History Of Use

Food container, made by women, used by women. Sometimes carved to look like a calabash, gourd. Sterilized and cleaned by burning embers of specific tree then wiped out with water using cow tail. Rounded bottom, easier to stand on sand surface.
