Description

Female doll (part a) with plaster face, hands, and feet. Black hair. Red round flat hat segmented and edged in gold which is tied under the chin with red silk. Top kimono is floral orange with light red lining. Under kimono is red with geometric gold cranes. Obi is gold brocade on orange ground. Woman is carrying wisteria branch in her right hand with the branch extending over her shoulder. Red lacquered wood and glass case (part b) surrounds doll. Base tied to cover with silk thread and having four panels of which three are glass and the fourth back panel is covered with silver dotted paper. The four panels are in a red lacquered frame.

Narrative

Part of the Miss Jessie M. Miller Collection. Miss Miller was a teaching evangelist for the Anglican Church of Canada.

Cultural Context

Doll would be displayed at girls festival in spring.
