Pipe Item Number: Ai6 a-b from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Light brown bamboo pipe stem (a) with copper wrapping at end opposite to bowl end. Bamboo segment has string with plastic and ceramic beads, two cowrie shells, and two nuts. The end which fits into the bowl is charred black. Dark brown pipe bowl (b) of right angled stone(?) is carved in a geometric pattern. Three pieces are glued onto top of bowl. The bowl is very fragile.

History Of Use

Used for smoking by both men and women.

Narrative

Mrs. Stephens said she purchased this pipe from a woman who was smoking it in the Jerbar market, in South Sudan.
