White folding fan spray painted with silver on both sides; silver and brown rim; thirteen ribs; calligraphy on outside ribs; black string threaded through base of fan.
Use of fans dates from 6th century; folding fans from the 10th century. Fans served many purposes in court life and different fans were used separate occasions, such as teas, religious ceremonies and dances. Fans with painted scenes or figures are common after the mid-19th century and were often made for export.
