Description

Narrow miniature gong drum (part a) with handle, and a drumstick ( part b). Rectangular gong (part a) is carved from a single piece of wood with the lower corners curving inward. The top has a long rectangular hollowed out section. Inverted u-shaped cane handle is nailed to each end. Roughly adzed overall. The gong has 'Lukumbi' written in ink on one side. Drumstick (part b) is carved from a single piece of wood, and is thick with a rounded striking end. Stick has 'Mombo' written in ink on handle.

History Of Use

Miniature version of a gong with drumsticks are made by men for sale to tourists. Gongs are used to call people to ceremonies or meetings. They are also used in rituals and celebrations.
