Black, lacquered, paper folding fan with ten ribs. Stylized blossoming trees are featured on both sides of fan.

History Of Use

Use of fans dates from 6th century; folding fans from the 10th century. Fans served many purposes in court life and different fans were used for separate occasions, such as teas, religious ceremonies and dances. Painted scenes or figures were common after the mid-19th century and were often made for export.

Narrative

Part of the Miss Jessie M. Miller Collection. Miss Miller was a teaching evangelist for the Anglican Church of Canada.
