Description

Half calabash gourd that has a heart-shaped bowl incised entirely with linear rings of diamond shapes, and crosshatching. The rings are in concentric circles to the centre. All designs are dark from rubbed soot.

History Of Use

Calabash bowls are used as food bowls, for wine and other liquids, or for ceremonial purposes. The specific function depends on the size and shape of the gourd. The carving of calabashes is done by specialized male artisans.
