Vessel Item Number: Sf378 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Gourd-shaped black ceramic jar with flaring neck and wide mouth. The upper portion is ornamented with a monkey figure, modelled in relief, sprawling across body of vessel with the jar neck raising from its back. The body has been broken and repaired.

Specific Techniques

Blackware is characteristic of the north coast from early times and is produced by firing in an unvented kiln. The modelled monkey motif, which appears on many Chimu ceramics, is also associated with earlier cultural traditions.
