Description

Hollowed log with a carved face projecting at each end. The snout of the smaller animal head is broken off; the longer head is human upturned, flat and smiling. The hollow is uneven, bulging on one side, and split at the top.

History Of Use

As a signal, the slit gong is used mainly in times of emergency or distress: war, sickness, announcements of death, and so on. It may also summon groups, announce feasts, etc. It has a limited role in initiation ceremonies.
