Description

Rectangular trunk-like basket (a) with lid (b). Trunk flares out from slat bottom. Coiled with bifurcated stitches; beaded band design of wild cherry bark on lower edge of lid. Diamond-shaped motif imbricated in wild cherry bark and grass on top of lid. Main design on two sides and two ends consists of imbricated diamond in black and red cherry bark and grass; black and white cross imbricated inside each diamond; sides have vertical bands imbricated at each end, ends have imbricated checker design at top; continuous imbricated band along top and bottom; one coiled handle at each end.

History Of Use

A gradual change is seen in Salish basketry traditions from the 1820's to the 1940's with the decline of utilitarian basket making and the increasing in decorated baskets made for sale.
