Description

Part (a) cylindrical coiled basket (with bifurcated stitches) (a) with lid (part b). Imbrication and beading and watch spring coiling. Lid is raised at centre. Bottom rim is beaded intermittently in cherry bark. Bottom of basket is imbricated in geometric design; sides are decorated with leaf-shaped motifs, 4 pair, alternating red and white with black and white. Lid has 4 sets of imbricated triangle motifs, alternating red and black. Centre of lid has beaded and imbricated circles.

History Of Use

A gradual change is seen in Salish basketry traditions from the 1820's to the 1940's with the decline of utilitarian basket making and the increase in decorated baskets, made for sale.
