Description
Small square woven leaf mat of fine regular weave. Natural field in centre with narrow widthwise stripes at each end in purple and green. Fringe along one end.
History Of Use
The antiquity of woven mats in India is supported by archaeological evidence and references in ancient texts. Mats are among the most important items in household furnishings in Indian society. Traditional mat style has been adapted in recent times for use as small place mats such as this one. Orissan mat weavers sell these as specialty items to tourists and elite classes. The seaside resort of Puri is also an important ritual centre where the Jagannath Temple attracts thousands of pilgrims. This place mat was purchased from a handicrafts' dealer, Puri temple bazaar.
