Description

Oval, natural coloured coiled basket (part a) and lid (part b). Basket has high sides and lid has a three-tiered coiled lip that fits over the basket.

History Of Use

The shining lustre of 'golden grass' used traditionally for weaving as well as the flexible coil construction are the characteristic features of this basketry made in Puri, Orissa. These baskets are now made primarily for sale in the stalls bordering the main street leading to the Jagannath Temple. A market is provided not only for the pilgrims who worship at this important ritual centre, but also for Bengali and foreign tourists who come to vacation at Puri which is also a leading seaside resort.
