Description

Small, rectangular carrying basket with rounded edges and two leather strip handles. Coiled with bifurcated stitches and slat bottom and sides. Cedar root with beaded designs in red and black wild cherry bark. Geometric design in alternating rows of red and black in four horizontal rows: the long sides have red in the middle with black at either side and the short ends have red.

History Of Use

The gradual change in the nature of basketry traditions from the 1820's to 1940's is seen in the decline of undecorated utility baskets and the rise of decorated baskets made for sale.
