Description

Circular basket (a) with flat bottom and flat-topped lid (b); bottom has small area of checker work and twining; body and lid are wrapped twined with cedar warp and checker work; outer running weft is grass; bottom and inner fixed weft are sedge fibre. Reinforced cedar hoop rim. Designs on body include bands of continuous rings of assorted colours with distinct geometric shapes within and on outer edges of bands. Lid has same geometric motif and circles in assorted colours around solid blue circle at centre. Exterior is faded; interior shows original red, blue, yellow, orange and black.

History Of Use

By the 20th century manufacture of utilitarian baskets had declined. The production of decorative baskets, made for sale, had increased markedly. These highly distinctive, finely woven, wrapped twined baskets depicted scenes, such as whaling, and covered a wide variety of commercial containers.
