Description

Cloth, roughly rectangular with a central seam, one hemmed edge and three frayed edges. The cloth has a herringbone pattern and has a small piece of black cloth sewn to it at one corner.

History Of Use

Used to wrap babies, along with swaddling bands, from birth to one year old. When closer to one year, swaddling is done only at night. Smaller cloths, used as diapers, are worn inside the swaddling clothes. Bayenta is made by males on the treadle loom.

Specific Techniques

Commercially spun synthetic yarns in a balanced 2:2 twill herringbone. 2 pieces, each with one selvedge are machine stitched.
