Basket Item Number: Ef243 a-b from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Basket (part a) of coiled variety, made in three pieces - base, body, and lid (part b). Base has been constructed first, and body which rounds out the sides and narrows at top is coiled above it. Material of inner coil is untwisted natural grass, added to at the free end. As coiling progresses, it is bound with a shining grass fillet to coil beneath with a stitch or wrap at very narrow intervals at centre, increasing to 1.5 cm. intervals. A triangular pattern made by over-weaving the shiny fillets on the finished basketry occurs on the base, sides, and lid.

History Of Use

The shining lustre of 'golden grass' used traditionally for weaving as well as the flexible coil construction are the characteristic features of this basketry made in Puri, Orissa. These baskets are now made primarily for sale in the stalls bordering the main street leading to the Jagannath Temple. A market is provided not only by the pilgrims who worship at this important ritual centre, but also by Bengali and foreign tourists who come to vacation at Puri which is also a leading seaside resort.
