Description
Small double woven cane basketry carrying case. Inside has wide woven cane strips. The opening is folded over and is crimped at the sides in a rectangular shape. The outer woven style is of natural cane giving horizontal herringbone effect. There are two cane handles that are attached to each side of the opening. There is also a long loop type fastener attached to one side and a small woven loop on the other side of the opening.
History Of Use
Cane weaving is characteristic of the basketry made in Puri, Orissa which is now made primarily for sale in the stalls bordering the main street leading to the Jagannath Temple. A market is provided not only by the pilgrims who worship at this important ritual centre, but also by Bengali and foreign tourists who come to vacation at Puri which is also a leading seaside resort. This type of woven cane valise is carried on shopping trips.
