Description
Small drawstring bag of black hand-woven cotton in plain weave. Geometric motif is embroidered in contrasting colours of white, purple, and yellow which closely follow the warp and weft of the fabric. Lined with black mill cloth. Machine seamed. Hand sewn to finish. Drawstring of three-strand, twisted cotton in red and white with orange cotton tassels.
History Of Use
Bihari women specialize in kashida embroidery using chain and running stitches to create stylized patterns and geometric forms. Coins and small personal items are carried in small bags in India, especially drawstring types. The traditional bag carried by women of all classes is small enough to be carried in a fold of the waistband of the sari. The large size of this object indicates that it probably has been produced for sale as a handicraft item.
