Pin Item Number: Sf1025 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Long metal pin with a flattened point on one end and a circular flat head on the other. The shaft is round in cross-section, but not very straight--it has a number of bumps and bows along its length. Surface is pitted and powered with rust.

History Of Use

Long metal pins are used in place of the shed roll and sword when a weaver is finishing the last few inches of a 4 selvedge cloth. When the warps have become too short to change sheds, the thick round shed roll is replaced with the slender metal pin. This allows the weaver to work a few more rows before removing all shedding devices and picking the shed of each row with a needle.
