Nōgaku gasui Item Number: N2.1133 a-h from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Rectangular portfolio (part h) that holds six prints (parts b-g) depicting different male Noh actors dressed in elaborate robes with long, shaggy hair, and female actresses in traditional costumes and elaborate coiffures. Part a is a green booklet called "NOH PLAY Explanation and Stories" (with Japanese characters under the English title). At the bottom of the booklet on the front, the English inscription continues: "SERIES 1 Kyoto Hanga in Co., 1954."

Narrative

Nōgaku gakaku (能樂画萃; Noh Play: Woodblock hand prints) contains prints by Yamaguchi Ryoshu (山口蓼洲) with his signature and seal. This set was published by Kyoto hanga-in (京都版画院) in 1954. The English translation was done by Shiraishi Fumio (白石文雄).
