Description

White bodied porcelain plate on low single ring foot; plate is round and concave. On underside are painted in underglaze blue, 1 of the 8 Chinese treasures (stone chimes), painted 3 times, alternating with 1 of 8 Buddhist emblems (conch shell). On upper surface is central floral design surrounded by ring of alternating triangles filled with flowers. Remaining surface is covered with 3 rows of medallions with flowers, phoenixes and dogs. All in light and dark blue, red-orange, blue-green, light purple and light orange. 2 character mark 'Tsuji sei'.

History Of Use

This plate is an example of Imari Ware, probably from late 19th to early 20th century. Such ware was made at various kilns and exported from the port of Imari. After the opening of Japan, it was made on a large scale for export.
