Description

Female form with oval head, a face flattened with long triangular nose, incised horizontal eyebrows and horizontal mouth, and small round inlaid eyes. Horizontal cylindrical 'top-knot' at back, top of head. Arms by sides are indicated by vertical crease both back and front. Large breasts and stomach and less protruding groin area. Legs taper to feetless ends. Flat between legs. Crease along backbone and indicating buttocks. Carving marks evident in all areas.

Cultural Context

Figures of women with top-knots at the back of their heads date to the Thule era (Ackerman; Moos). Probably from the central Canadian Arctic or Greenland (Damas, p.534).
