Pair of brass candle holders, each composed of 6 parts. Parts a, g are bases, each having a round flat plate on single ring foot, incised with the design of 2 bats; on the centre is mounted a round post. Parts b, h are round plates with flat bases, straight sides and flat rim with round centre hole fitting over a and g respectively. To this are attached 2 transverse round bars to the opposite ends of which is attached a hollow rectangular bar. Parts d, j hang over the lower transverse bars of c and i and each consists of a piece of heavy wire, bent into soldered elongated s-shapes. Attached to lower end of s is a 1/2 crescent pointing downwards, made of brass rod with finial on which is mounted a freely moving brass moth with fully modeled body. Parts f, l fit on ends of a and g and each consists of a brass tube at upper end of which is mounted a cup with outturned cup and 5 petal shaped pieces bent so that points nearly touch mouth. The post of part a has been broken from base and soldered back in place.

History Of Use

These candle holders were probably made for export or for sale to Europeans, as Korean candlesticks have spikes on which to insert the candle.
