Description

Bowhead whale shaped handle or toggle with a rectangular hole transversely through centre; oval incised flippers at bottom corner of hole, just before inlaid eyes and beginning of mouth incision which follows long tapering snout. Narrows before tail flukes at back.

History Of Use

Possibly a drag handle. Drag handles were used for hauling heavy weights, especially seals, over snow and ice. The form of handle varies with its use. May also be a drill handle (see Fitzhugh p.169).
