Description

Shoulder bag with a square body and an off-white woven strap with a band of repeated zigzag lines in pink. The body has a geometric design composed of repeated floral and stepped diamond shapes. The top border has a series of pink and red crosses on yellow bordered in green.

History Of Use

The kuchuri was worn with the straps crossing from opposite shoulders and was used to carry personal objects; some of the richly embroidered bags were used for carrying the collected peyote plant.

Iconographic Meaning

The symbols on the items of clothing usually represents some aspect of religion or a vision; the diamonds are used to prevent the entry of departed spirits through an unwanted path.

The Wixáritari are known to the larger world as the Huichol, however that is not the name they use to refer to themselves.
