Description

Print titled "Picture of the destruction of Russian fleet of war vessels outside the Port of Lushun (Port Arthur), no. 3", of a sea battle from the Russo-Japanese war (1904-1905). Depicted is a print of battle ships at sea that has two oval shaped portraits of two men, Admiral Tōgō (left), for the Japanese, and for the Russians (right), Yevgeni Ivanovich Alekesyev located at the top and centre of the print. Next to one man, there is a Russian flag and next to the other man, there is a Japanese flag. The titles in Japanese characters frame the print. The caption written in English at the bottom reads: "The destruction of Russian fleet of war vessels. The illustration of war of Japan and Russia."

Narrative

This print by Kasai Torajirō (葛西虎次郎) is titled, Ryojunkōgai daikaisen shinzu sonosan, rokoku kantai no zenmetsu (旅順港外大海戦真図 其参 露国艦隊の全滅; Picture of the destruction of Russian fleet of war vessels outside the Port of Lushun [Port Arthur], no. 3) from of the series Nichiro sentō gahō (日露戦闘画報; Visual record of the Russo-Japanese War), No. 3 (第参; daisan), published also by Kasai Torajirō of Seiun-dō (青雲堂). The text in Japanese at the left bottom reads; “明治卅七年二月十日印刷同年同月三十日発行画作兼印刷発行者東京神田區南乗物街五十番地青雲堂葛西虎次郎” (Printed February 10 in Meiji 39 (1904). Picture made, and published by Kasai Torajirō of Seiun-dō at 50 Minami-Norimono-chō, Kanda, Tokyo in the same year, 30 of the same month).
