Bone Box Item Number: 2696/1 a-l from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Manga mural using old plywood trays that have been painted and mounted as a rectangular 12-panel installation piece. The panels are installed as four vertical rows and three horizontal rows (top, left to right: parts a-d, middle parts e-h, bottom parts i-l). Each panel is installed to swivel from a vertical to horizontal position and when viewed horizontally each panel reveals a word on its top edge. When read in order the words form the sentence: "A STACK OF PLYWOOD TRAYS BUILT TO CONTAIN FRAGMENTS OF EVERYONE'S CULTURE".

Narrative

Fabricated out of discarded trays that once stored UBC archaeological collections, this interactive work calls for engagement with one another. The 12 panel piece was made in 2007 as part of Yahgulanaas' exhibition "Meddling in the Museum". As part of the exhibition, it was installed on a vertical steel frame (built at MOA, in consultation with the artist), in the Great Hall. During the run of the exhibition the piece was purchased by MOA, with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts Acquisition program.
