Bag Item Number: 2726/1 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Heavily beaded pouch-type bag has long, wide shoulder strap. Blue, white, dark and olive green, gold, pink, yellow, black, and orange glass beads are sewn in floral designs onto red wool, which is stitched to a backing of tan coloured skin with a khaki cotton edging. Beaded top flap of small pouch lifts up to reveal red wool pocket with green and orange edging and blue cotton lining.

Narrative

The bag was given to F. Denise Ludwig (nee Greenwood) by her grandmother in the 1960s. Her grandmother was Indigenous, living in the Babine Lake area, and had married a Mr. Greenwood of the Hudson Bay Co. (-perhaps the Babine HB trading post?). However the family didn't know if the grandmother was of Dakelhne or Metis origin.
