Harpoon Head Item Number: 1927.1633 from the MAA: University of Cambridge

Description

A harpoon head made of a piece of mussel shell fixed in between two hollow pieces of wood, the ends of which are lashed with bark. The shell is coated with spruce gum and is badly chipped.; Fragile.

Kaeppler Holophusicon: The Leverian Museum (2011:221) notes the general provenance (for objects that include 1922.956-7; 1927.1633) falls within the area from Nootka Sound in Canada to Unalaska, Alaska, USA. One Leverian lot for these objects records Nootka Sound (1567, see above - historical name, King George's Sound, given). Text with Figure 6.124 (2011:222) notes 1927.1633 as Nootka or Chukchi. Place field updated to reflect this.
