Context

The original European tribal names and, where possible, current tribal names have both been given in separate GLT fields.; It is noted on the catalogue card that this is possibly a shaman' s basket , however in Bill Holm' s Box of Daylight (University of Washington Press: Seattle, 1983) page 52, figure 67, he comments these baskets were used to store women' s sewing equipment, or small objects of value . The baskets are known as rattle top as there is a raised, flattened knob on the lid which has pebbles or some such rattling objects inside. Apparently these baskets are rare and much sought after by collectors.; Exhibited: New anthropology displays at CUMAA, wall case, object No.10, 1990-.
