Cane basket with cedar bark head band for carrying.

Context

Identified as ?Kwakiutl by George Heye. The basket is almost identical to one illustrated in Andrea Laforet' s article Windows on Diversity: Northwest Coast Baskets in the Pitt Rivers Collection in Basketmakers (Ed. L.Mowat, H.Morphy, P.Dransart, 1992, Pitt Rivers Museum: Oxford) page 43, figure 38. This basket was collected at Nawiti, making it Kwakiutl or Kwakwaka' wakw.; Such large baskets with cedar bark tumplines were used for collecting firewood, roots, berries, and shellfish. The original European tribal names and, where possible, current tribal names have both been given in separate GLT fields. Cane basket with cedar bark head band for carrying. This is the detail on the catalogue card, and noted as missing in 1981. However a basket in North America Unprovenanced fits this description, and had been given the accession number Z 35110, which has also been assigned to a Northwest Coast cedar bark mat, for this reason the basket will be re-assigned its old accession number and stored with the Northwest Coast material (G.Crowther).; Good
