Context

The catalogue card and the accession book give the provenance of this object as Northwest Coast, collected in 1862, however it is a very unusual subject matter for the area. It lacks the characteristic style of carving, using ovoids and U-forms,and yet is similar in overall shape to other dishes from the area (G.Crowther). The original European tribal names and, where possible, current tribal names have both been given in separate GLT fields.; It is possible the dish was carved after a chicken was encountered through contact, or was carved specifically for a European market. Overall, however it is an unusual object (G.Crowther).; Collected in 1862
