Spoon Item Number: Z 43586 from the MAA: University of Cambridge

Description

Undecorated deep bowled spoon with down-turned tip of handle. The spoon has dried out considerably and is rather fragile. The assertion that the spoon is made from wood stems from the fact the tip of the handle appears to be bent over rather thancarved.; Good

Context

This spoon is rather unusual in form for the Northwest coast which is further compounded by the ambiguous provenance given to the spoon as Otahiiti which is the old name for Tahiiti. The original European tribal names and, where possible, current tribal names have both been given in separate GLT fields.; The undecorated form of the spoon may indicate its everyday use as opposed to the ceremonial use of the decorated types (G.Crowther).; Collected by: ?Lee.T.F
