Context
The canoe type was, as stated on the catalogue card, used by Saanitch (sic) Indians, a Salish tribe who live on Saanich Peninsular and the neighbouring islands southwest of Vancouver Island. A handwritten label stuck inside the canoe reads Model of Indian canoe used by Saanich Indians, British Columbia. Each village or district has a little difference in the prow. Sent me by my niece M.Ridgeway, Christmas 1924, W.R. The original European tribal names and, where possible, current tribal names have both been given in separate GLT fields.; During the early 1900' s there was a considerable trade in tourist objects which were replicas of larger ethnographic artefacts, such as totem poles, and canoes (G.Crowther).; Collected by: Ridgeway.Marian
