Description

An undecorated paddle, dark in colour, with coil lashing on handle. On the lashing there is a small piece of red cord. The paddle has a crutch grip at the handle end which has had woodworm. The paddle bears a label which states Tlingit Indians, British Columbia, Baron A. von Hugel .; Good

Context

The catalogue card states the paddle is Puget Sound Tlingit Indians which is a rather confusing provenance because the Tlingit are many miles from Puget Sound. However the undecorated style of the paddle suggests a provenance of Puget Sound rather than Tlingit, but this is only speculation (G.Crowther). The original European tribal names and, where possible, current tribal names have both been given in separate GLT fields. The catalogue card states, See Indians of the Northwest Coast Smithsonian Report 1888 page 325. The shape and size of this paddle suggests it is a crew paddle (G.Crowther).
