Paddle Item Number: E 1904.385 from the MAA: University of Cambridge

Description

A fine paddle with oar-shaped blade painted with a design composed of eye-ovoids and U-forms with cross- hatching. The designs on the two sides of the blade are different. The design is possibly a bird but it is highly abstract.; Good

Context

The style of painting, which is highly abstract and beautifully designed suggests it is northern in origin, possibly Bella Bella or Haida (G.Crowther). The original European tribal names and, where possible, current tribal names have both been given in separate GLT fields.; This is possibly a steering paddle, or a dance paddle, due to its length and it is less pointed than the crew paddles (G.Crowther).; Exhibited: Old Anthropological displays at CUMAA, case 34 and 35, dismantled 081986.
