Description

A paddle with a pointed blade and a crutch handle. The blade is painted with a red and black design with an eye, ovoids and U-forms. It is a distributive type of design which makes it difficult to ascertain the identity of the crest represented. A portion of solid black painting extends upwards from the blade towards the handle, this is broken by red bands. The designs are different on either side of the blade. On the other the eye has a possible foot or claw design beneath it instead of themouth on the other side.; Good

Context

Bill McLennan of the University of British Columbia, Museum of Anthropology, suggests, 061992, that the paddle is not Haida as originally marked on the catalogue card but instead Bella Bella or Heiltsuk. The original European tribal names and, where possible, current tribal names have both been given in separate GLT fields.; The shape and size of this paddle suggests it is a crew paddle (G.Crowther).; Collected in ?1855A small printed label us attached to the shaft of the paddle, with the number '453'.
