Description

Rectangular, coiled storage basket with foot; lid with looped handle on each end. Constructed of slat foundation and split stitches. Completely imbricated with light yellow-brown grass background and black and red geometric cherry bark design. Fitted lid has cherry bark beading in red-brown and black on top. Edge is imbricated.

History Of Use

Traditionally, baskets were used for a variety of domestic purposes, but starting in the mid-19th century, many basketry goods were made as sale items to provide a source of cash income.

Narrative

Skookumchuck was recorded as the community of origin for this basket during a visit made by Mount Currie basket makers to the Museum of Anthropology.
