Iconographic Meaning

This type of plant design is fairly uncommon. Other baskets with this design have been attributed to the Cultus Lake area, Chilliwack and Musqueam. The late Sto:lo Elder Rosaleen George said she had been given a tree design from an Aunt at Musqueam. (She was related to the Point family.) According to Sto:lo basket maker Rena Point Bolton when a basket maker uses large quantities of red in the ornamentation, especially near the rim, the basket may have been made for a daughter or granddaughter. The use of large quantities of red is indicative of love for a female relative.
