Description

Saucer shaped dish which is rough under the glaze. Edge has eight scallops. Inside has a spray of lotus-like flowers, leaves and a butterfly. Outer surface has two stylized red bats. There are two lines and a chain design around foot rim. Inside foot rim is rough with glue and dirt.

History Of Use

This type of ceramic was carried by Chinese migrating to Southeast Asia. This ware was also used within China.

Iconographic Meaning

The bat is a symbol of longevity and happiness. The lotus is a symbol of summer and fruitfulness. The butterfly is a symbol of joy.
