Spear Carving Item Number: Na684 from the MOA: University of British Columbia

Description

Miniature model of a hooked hunting spear consisting of a hook on the end of a notched handle.

History Of Use

Until recently, art did not play a central role in the life of the Eskimos. The arrival of the white man in the arctic meant a demand for souvenirs. Contemporary Eskimo carving first emerged, however, in 1948-49, and it continues today. The subject matter is usually figurines of traditional Eskimos and the animals with which they were familiar.
