Description

Tall, square based basket with gently flaring walls to the rim. Below the rim, open spaces are separated by twisted cedar bark. The walls are decorated with thirty one horizontal strips of green-black bark grouped into ten bands.

History Of Use

Basketry filled a vital need as containers for storage, domestic use and transportation of goods. Some had multiple uses; others were made for specific functions. After European contact, used for trade and sale items. Forms have been altered to meet European tastes. Basketry making was and is a women's art.

Specific Techniques

The basket was woven with the simple plaiting technique, with overlay. Warp ends were placed against reinforcing bundles and secured with wrapping for the rim.
