Oil Jarlet Item Number: Edz1437 from the MOA: University of British Columbia
A small ceramic jar with a flattened sphere. Short neck with rounded mouth rim. Slightly concave recessed unglazed base. Heavy, somewhat coarse yellowish grey body. Thin, matte, crackled brown-black glaze falls evenly short of the base with the exception of several pooled drips.
Correlation of excavated sherds from kiln sites in Kuangtung with finds in Southeast Asia, particularly in Malaysia, has demonstrated the existence of a vast traffic in ceramics between the two areas from the 10th century. The bulk of this material can be dated to the Early Sung Dynasty (960 -1127 C.E.).
