Description

A small barrel-shaped stepped, incurving slightly at the lip, cup with a slightly flared foot ring. Cut vertically on inner surface. Glazed with a slightly convex base. Light yellow-white, heavy, fine-grained body, showing some burnt iron spots on the unglazed foot rim. Thick, light grey-white glaze pools over lip, forms welt midway down exterior wall.

History Of Use

Probably intended for domestic use within China. May be a type of ware called Sh-fu since these two characters, interpreted as meaning "privy council" are frequently found inscribed in raised slip within comparable vessels. They were widely exported throughout Southeast Asia.
