Description

A small ceramic box in the shape of a flattened sphere. Flat unglazed base with minimal foot ring. A dense, glassy, blue-white translucent body. Box is vertically ribbed to foot, and lid vertically ribbed to junction with flat top. Top (part b) patterned with spray of moulded lotus leaves. Light yellow-white thin translucent glaze falls irregularly toward foot ring, pooling into deeper yellow drips. Interior dressed in white slip.

History Of Use

Covered boxes of all shapes and sizes have been made by the coastal kiln complexes from the Song to the Qing (periods) and exported in quantities to Southeast Asia, according to Peter Y.K. Lam in "A Ceramic Legacy of Asia's Maritime Trade".
