Description

A ceramic dish that has an angular form with steep, slightly flared sides. There is a small splayed foot and a grey-white body. Unglazed foot rim and base, which is convex with small point. Glazed inside and out with thick, opaque, white glaze which has formed a raised welt around the circumference of the dish a short distance below the rim.

History Of Use

A type of ware called "Sh-fu" since these two characters ( interpreted as meaning "privy council") are frequently found inscribed in raised slip within comparable vessels. They were widely exported throughout Southeast Asia. This distinctively shaped dish has sometimes been referred to as a brush washer.

Specific Techniques

Slip is clay reduced to a creamy liquid by the addition of water.
